Two different formulas, two different approaches to supporting healthy joints. š¾
When we think about joint health in dogs, we often associate joint supplements with ageing, arthritis or difficulty moving. However, supporting healthy joints isn't something we should only consider when our pets start slowing down.
Our pets rely on their joints every single day, whether they're running, jumping, playing, climbing stairs or simply getting up from their favourite sleeping spot.
At Betty's Raw Recipes, we believe in supporting our pets throughout their lives, which is why we offer two different joint-support formulas: Wag & FlexĀ and Healthy Joints.
Although both contain ingredients that support cartilage, connective tissues and mobility, they have been developed with different nutritional objectives.
Let's explore the differences and understand when each may be appropriate.
𦓠Understanding How Your Pet's Joints Work
Before discussing supplements, it's important to understand what makes up a healthy joint.
A joint is where two or more bones meet, allowing movement while providing stability.
Several structures work together to keep joints functioning properly:
Cartilage:Ā A smooth, specialised connective tissue that covers the ends of bones and helps distribute pressure during movement.
Synovial fluid:Ā A lubricating fluid that helps reduce friction between joint surfaces.
Ligaments:Ā Strong connective tissues that connect bones and stabilise joints.
Tendons:Ā Connect muscles to bones, allowing muscles to produce movement.
Muscles:Ā Support joint stability, movement and shock absorption.
As pets grow, mature and age, these structures are exposed to different physical demands.
Genetics, body weight, previous injuries, activity levels, muscle condition and certain developmental or degenerative conditions can all influence joint health.
This is why joint care should be approached differently depending on the individual animal.

šæ Wag & Flex: Supporting Healthy Joints From an Early Age
A preventative approach to joint and connective tissue nutrition.
Wag & Flex was developed with younger dogs, including puppies, and active adult dogs in mind.
The objective is to provide nutritional support for healthy cartilage, connective tissues and normal joint function before age-related mobility problems become apparent.
Wag & Flex contains several important structural nutrients.
Glucosamine ā Supporting Cartilage Structure
Glucosamine is a naturally occurring compound involved in the production of glycosaminoglycans, which form part of the cartilage matrix.
Cartilage helps cushion joints and distribute forces during movement.
Supplemental glucosamine is commonly used in canine joint products, although clinical evidence for preventing joint disease or improving osteoarthritis symptoms remains mixed.
Chondroitin ā Supporting Cartilage Resilience
Chondroitin sulphate is another component of cartilage.
It contributes to the structure of proteoglycans, which help cartilage retain water and resist compression.
Glucosamine and chondroitin are frequently combined in joint-support formulas because they participate in related aspects of cartilage biology.
Hyaluronic Acid ā A Component of Joint Lubrication
Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in synovial fluid and cartilage.
It contributes to the viscosity and lubricating properties of synovial fluid, allowing joint surfaces to move smoothly.
Oral hyaluronic acid is being investigated for joint support, although the strength of evidence in dogs remains limited.
Collagen Peptides ā Supporting Connective Tissues
Collagen is one of the body's most abundant structural proteins.
It forms an important part of tendons, ligaments, cartilage and other connective tissues.
Collagen peptides provide amino acids and small peptides that may contribute to connective tissue nutrition.
However, eating collagen does not mean that it is directly deposited into the joints. It is digested and processed by the body.
Vitamin C ā Essential for Collagen Formation
Vitamin C plays an essential role in normal collagen synthesis.
It acts as a cofactor for enzymes involved in stabilising collagen structure.
Unlike humans, healthy dogs can normally synthesise their own vitamin C. Nevertheless, vitamin C remains biologically essential, and its inclusion in a formula may contribute to the overall nutritional approach.
Zinc, Copper and Manganese ā Important Trace Minerals
These minerals perform important functions in connective tissue development and maintenance.
ZincĀ participates in numerous enzymatic processes, protein synthesis and normal tissue maintenance.
CopperĀ is required for the activity of lysyl oxidase, an enzyme involved in collagen and elastin cross-linking.
ManganeseĀ acts as a cofactor for enzymes involved in connective tissue and cartilage matrix formation.
All three minerals are essential, but they must be supplied in appropriate quantities. Excessive supplementation is not beneficial and can interfere with mineral balance.
š Who May Benefit From Wag & Flex?
Wag & Flex may be considered for:
Growing puppies, including large and giant breeds, when the formula and dose are appropriate for their age and diet.
Young, active adult dogs.
Sporting and working dogs exposed to regular physical demands.
Dogs whose owners want to take a proactive approach to connective tissue nutrition.
An important distinction:Ā Nutritional support is not the same as proven disease prevention. No joint supplement has been conclusively demonstrated to prevent developmental joint disorders or arthritis in otherwise healthy dogs.
For growing puppies, especially large breeds, maintaining appropriate growth rates, correct calcium and phosphorus balance, and a healthy body condition is particularly important.
Wag & Flex is intended to complement these foundations, not replace them.

ā¤ļø Healthy Joints: More Targeted Support for Mobility and Joint Comfort
While Wag & Flex focuses on maintaining normal joint structures, Healthy Joints contains a broader combination of ingredients selected for cartilage support, connective tissue nutrition and joint comfort.
It may be particularly relevant for older pets, animals showing changes in mobility or those with greater joint-support needs.
Healthy Joints includes several structural nutrients also found in Wag & Flex, including glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen peptides and hyaluronic acid.
However, its formulation goes further by incorporating additional ingredients.
Green-Lipped Mussel ā Marine Nutrients for Joint Support
Green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) contains marine lipids, including omega-3 fatty acids, alongside other naturally occurring compounds.
Certain green-lipped mussel preparations have been studied in dogs with osteoarthritis, with some trials reporting improvements in mobility or clinical signs.
However, results vary depending on the preparation, dosage and study design.
This makes the quality and composition of the ingredient particularly relevant.
MSM ā Methylsulfonylmethane
MSM is an organic sulphur-containing compound frequently included in joint-support supplements.
Sulphur is involved in various biological processes and is present in many structural molecules.
MSM has been investigated for its potential effects on inflammation and joint discomfort.
However, robust clinical evidence for MSM alone in dogs remains limited, so its benefits should not be overstated.
Boswellia ā Botanical Support for Joint Comfort
Boswellia extracts are obtained from the resin of trees belonging to the BoswelliaĀ genus.
They contain compounds known as boswellic acids, which have been investigated for their effects on inflammatory pathways.
Some preliminary canine research suggests potential benefits for joint-related clinical signs, although larger, controlled studies are needed.
Boswellia is therefore an interesting ingredient for targeted joint support, but it should not be described as a replacement for prescribed anti-inflammatory medication.
Devil's Claw ā A Botanical Ingredient for Mobility Support
Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is traditionally used in herbal preparations for musculoskeletal discomfort.
Its main researched compounds include harpagosides.
Although it has been investigated for joint discomfort, much of the available clinical evidence comes from human studies.
Reliable canine clinical evidence remains limited.
Because devil's claw contains biologically active compounds, its suitability should be assessed carefully in pets receiving medication or living with certain medical conditions.
Collagen, Glucosamine, Chondroitin and Hyaluronic Acid
Healthy Joints also provides the structural nutrients discussed earlier.
These ingredients address different aspects of joint biology, including cartilage composition, connective tissue nutrition and synovial fluid function.
Combining these nutrients with marine and botanical ingredients creates a broader nutritional approach than a formula focused primarily on structural support.
However, combining more ingredients does not automatically guarantee better clinical results. Their effectiveness depends on ingredient quality, dose, bioavailability and the individual animal.
š¾ Who May Benefit From Healthy Joints?
Healthy Joints may be considered for:
Senior dogs experiencing age-related changes in mobility.
Dogs showing stiffness after rest or reduced willingness to exercise.
Dogs with diagnosed osteoarthritis, as part of a veterinarian-guided management plan.
Dogs recovering from certain musculoskeletal injuries, where supplementation is considered appropriate.
Pets requiring a more targeted approach to joint comfort and connective tissue support.
Healthy Joints is not a cure for arthritis, hip dysplasia or other joint disorders, and it cannot be assumed to regenerate damaged cartilage.
Pets showing pain, lameness or changes in mobility should be assessed by a veterinarian to identify the underlying cause.
